The Last Two Episodes Of 'Medium' Were Brutal

MediumNaturally, since Cynthia Keener (Anjelica Huston) was given a redemptive storyline for her character and the audience was just starting to accept her, it meant her arc was over. That's cold, "Medium." In this conclusion to the two-part "Wicked Games," all of the problems introduced were resolved cleanly, although one resulted in happiness while the other in acute tragedy. Allison has often been the one hunting murderers and kidnappers, and she has occasionally connected or sympathized with them, but this time a murderer was one of her comrades. This may affect her in episodes to come, or it may simply be swept under the rug as a dark and twisted storyline with no satisfying closure.

In part one, Allison had nightmares about Cynthia's kidnapped daughter Susie. She saw the case from nine years ago unravel and reveal that a woman Joanna, who appeared to be kidnapped as well and Susie's friend, was in on it all along. Joanna was 'rescued' in the end of the episode from another kidnapper, who was shot to death. Also, Joe had a vision that he was supposed to use solar power to invent new objects. He wanted to take the children's college fund, but Allison would not let him, and they had a vicious fight.

Part two starts off directly afterwards, with Allison showing up at the hospital where Joanna is being kept. She tells Cynthia the truth, but Cynthia does not believe her since Joanna was the one who murdered the kidnapper and why would she kill her own partner? To protect herself, of course, since she heard a message on her phone from Cynthia and realized someone was on to her. Cynthia and Allison question Joanna but are not able to break through her calm, polite exterior. They start looking for her original partner, Peter Connolly. He is remorseful about what happened and broke up with Joanna after they disposed of Susie's body.

Allison witnesses a dream where Susie says goodbye to her mother and realizes where the body is. The skeleton is found and identified. Peter Connolly sees on the television that the body was found, and Joanna encourages him to keep quiet. When he is about to tell the truth, he is found dead in his home, and there is no doubt to who the culprit is. Still, there is no proof and no leads, so Joanna is untouchable. Cynthia knows now her daughter is dead and who did it, but she cannot bring Joanna to justice by law. So she kills Joanna herself, calls the police, and has Allison sit with her on the porch until they come to take her away.

On the family end of things, Joe is still furious that Allison will not believe in him. Bridgette has a vision that a white haired man at the bank wants to give him money, but no one will give him a loan. She turns out to be correct but only after Joe slips and fractures a bone in his wrist. The white haired man is the owner, who pays him 15,000 dollars to not sue. He will not touch the college fund now and can start his business. Yay!

These two episodes were brutal, and it would take a very hard heart not to be affected by all of the raw emotion. Angelica Huston's stand-out performance was memorable, especially in the last few moments of the episode when she was nearly peaceful in her acceptance of the fate she chose. The question is whether or not this will continue as a memory in "Medium" for Allison or if it will be forgotten. Is Cynthia gone for good? Perhaps she can continue for a look at her case, and Allison could be called in as a witness. It is possible, but unlikely; Huston may go on to do other projects. As a fan, I do hope this is not the last of the story, if only to see what Allison takes from the experience. She is a mother as well, and would she have done the same if the roles were reversed?

Next week Rosanna Arquette will be guest starring. Patricia has not performed with her sister on screen before, or so the previews say, and it feels a little like type casting to have Rosanna play a femme fatale. This would mean Alexis Arquette will be the only sibling not to have a part of "Medium." Give it another season!
