Music Review: Josh Gracin's Sophomore Effort Delivers Mixed Results

Josh GracinJosh Gracin, ''We Weren't Crazy'' (Lyric Street) Like many ''American Idol'' finalists, Josh Gracin started out with a fast-selling debut, then struggled for sustained attention from radio and fans.

Four years after his debut and after two aborted album releases in the last two years, Gracin at long last has a second album, ''We Weren't Crazy.'' The title comes from the third song from the album to strive for airplay, all with mixed results. Also like many ''Idol'' finalists, Gracin is a talented singer without a clear direction or musical personality of his own.

He started as a Garth Brooks fanatic, and he flashes the most personality on rowdy, up-tempo songs like ''Livin' It Up.'' Too many new cuts, such as ''Found'' and ''Let Me Fall,'' have the dynamic drama of Rascal Flatts, but Gracin doesn't do enough to establish a distinct vocal style of his own.

At his worse, songs like ''Telluride'' and the silly ''Favorite State of Mind'' rely too much on empty wordplay and high-concept ideas with little relation to real life. As a balladeer, he's similarly generic, especially when saddled with a low-calorie lyric like ''Unbelievable (Ann Marie).''
