Stones Defied Scorsese To Give Documentary Imax Treatment

April 1st, 2008 7:15pm EDT  Post a comment

The Rolling StonesThe Rolling Stones insisted their documentary Shine A Light be reformatted for large-screen Imax cinemas - against the wishes of director Martin Scorsese.

The legendary director filmed the rockers throughout their 2006 A Bigger Bang world tour and aimed to make a "small intimate movie", according to the band's frontman Mick Jagger.

But the "Gimme Shelter" hitmakers insisted on giving the film the bigger screen treatment to allow it to be released in a record 93 Imax movies theatres internationally - much to the annoyance of Scorsese.

Jagger says, "It'll be very large. After looking at all the options, Marty decided he wanted to make this small intimate movie. And I said the laugh is on Marty in the end, because we'd blown it up on this huge Imax thing... But it looks good on Imax, and we've got both formats, so we're happy with that."
