Former Gilligan's Island star Dawn Wells has gone public with her efforts to clear her name after marijuana was found in her car during a traffic stop. The actress, who played Mary Ann in the beloved U.S. TV show, admits she's upset by media reports she's a drug user and agreed to be interviewed for the TV news show Entertainment Tonight to explain the truth.
The 69-year-old was alleged to have been sentenced to five days in jail, placed on six months' probation and fined $410.50 at a hearing in Driggs, Idaho on February 29th after pleading guilty to reckless driving following a recent arrest on suspicion of possessing marijuana. However Kelly insists the media has got its facts wrong.
She says, "I need to put the kibosh on rumors. It was my birthday and I was coming from a dinner. The marijuana found in the car was not mine. The marijuana charge was dismissed and the person whom it belonged to went to jail. There was no DUI charge. I want to make it clear that I was charged with a traffic offense."
She also disputes reports that she failed a sobriety test. She confirms she was charged with reckless driving and takes responsibility for that. She adds, "I was weaving. I was trying to turn on the heater and was in an unfamiliar car. But I've only had one ticket in my life and I was going seven miles over the speed limit."
