'Medium': It Never Gets Easy For A Modern Psychic

MediumRejoice "Medium" fans, for Miguel Sandoval is back, and he graces the screen for ... two whole minutes! Wow, that was worth waiting for. The previews promise that former District Attorney Manuel Devalos will be returning for real in the upcoming episodes, so this little blip can be forgiven as merely a taste of what has been missing. In the two minutes he has on screen, he warms it up substantially and brings Allison support, humor, and a job opportunity. Devalos can do it all, and this is why he was missed.

The episode was titled "Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble," and that is an understatement considering the plot. Allison has a silent movie picture dream about DA Van Dyke trying to throw her poor family out and lawyer Larry Watt showing up to save the day. Watt and Allison have a long history of dislike and controversy, so when it is him that Devalos sends her to help, it is a surprise for her and the audience.

Watt offers her a job: to assist him on a defense case when a husband is accused of murdering his wife. Just as Allison is feeling excited to be back on a case, she has a dream that implies their client is actually guilty and is faced with a difficult dilemma. Can she work with the man if she knows he is guilty, or does she turn down the money that could help her family stay afloat?

There is a side story with Joe trying to find out how Ariel is making her money, and he discovers she charged another girl for a psychic reading. It serves to show how the entire family is effected by their loss of income and also focuses Allison on whether or not she can sell her visions. It turns out she can, and a twist is added when she sees that it was not their client that killed his wife ... but his violent, mentally unstable daughter. Or is that just a red herring for Allison, as well?

The plot of this episode was fascinating, and Attorney Watt provided a very practical, if somewhat morally gray, approach to life. He was always an antagonistic character, but this time his motives and personal reasons are explored, and he comes out more of a hero -- like in her dream. Allison has to decide if she can let an innocent man take the blame for something he did not do or allow him to protect his child. Any parent could understand the struggle, and Watt clearly points out that they all do what they can for family.

It was an interesting moral quandary for Allison, although it would have been more so if the man truly had murdered his wife. Just once I would like her to be placed in a situation where she really did have to defend a guilty party, and there is no time like the present with her situation as desperate as it is. The show wanted to take us there but took a step back just before the heroine could truly go too far. They should trust that the audience is close enough to the Dubois' that we could forgive a mistake or two, rather than them always coming out as the righteous honorable party.

Next week Allison is placed in an uncomfortable position yet again when her visions seem to imply that Devalos' political supporter is a villain. Devalos will be opening up his own practice, and since in many ways he lost his former position due to her (albeit not due to her fault, merely her gifts), she will have a hard time hurting his budding business.

It never gets easy for a modern psychic. Keep a look out for Patricia Arquette on "The Tonight Show" this Friday!
