Let Go Of The Jack-Kate-Sawyer Triangle On 'Lost'

LostOne of the greatest strengths that "Lost" has is its ability to manipulate the audience into feeling a certain way. In a given episode, a viewer can move from laughter to tears in one perfectly written scene, and it is one of the few shows that perpetually can make its fans gasp. Last week, the reveal of Sayid as an assassin in the future working for Ben of all people was one of those 'Wow!' moments, and if possible, this week's episode, "Eggtown," surpassed that surprise.

It is a flashforward again, and this time it is for fugitive killer Kate. Many people have wondered how exactly Kate managed to get home and not end up in jail; well, this episode gives us the answer. It is her murder trial, and due to the efforts of Jack on the stand and her mother's heartfelt refusal to lose her daughter again, Kate managed to walk away without any jail time. Who did she have to go home to? Her son. If you were looking to see if he was a little mini-Sawyer, or even a mini-Jack, you'd be very disappointed. But if you were looking for something to make you stare at the screen in slack-jawed shock, this ending certainly delivers.

On the Island, Kate is living in the Other village, but it is not to make up with her on-again off-again beau Sawyer. She always has an ulterior motive, and this one involves finding out if the freighter people know she is a fugitive. Miles is locked in the boathouse and agrees to tell her the truth about her notoriety if she gets him a meeting with Ben, who is trapped in Locke's basement. She does manage to get the answers, but only from angering Locke enough that he kicks her from the village. After a sweet night with Sawyer, they get into a fight and appear to break up, although with those two it is always difficult to tell. On the beach front, the plane never made it back to the freighter with Desmond, Locke and Frank inside.

Lost

"Eggtown" answered several questions about the future that fans were curious about: does Kate have a son, who was the "he" she mentioned in the finale, and how did she escape jail? In typical "Lost" fashion, it brought up just as many questions as it answered and left us yearning for more. Miles is willing to be paid off by Ben for $3.2 million dollars ... who is Ben? He has access to enormous amounts of money, and he has dozens of passports. His character continues to be the most warped, fascinated, and mysterious villain on television. Even while trapped in his own basement he manages to taunt and torture Locke, and we all know it is a matter of time before Ben breaks out to terrorize the Losties again.

My only criticism of this show is the one I've been saying for two seasons: let go of the Jack-Kate-Sawyer triangle. I know this is a dream of mine, since it will go on until the very last episode of this show, but I do not think I am alone in my weariness toward the will-they won't-they tripe. Sawyer even pointed it out to Kate in this episode -- he said in a week she would be back when Jack makes her angry, and I could not agree more. It is getting predictable and is taking away from "Lost. We care about the Island, the Mysteries, and how they survive, but leave the soap opera drama for an inferior show.

A thing to keep an eye on this week was Daniel Faraday doing another series of strange tests with Charlotte. He guesses playing cards being placed face down, and it was not clear whether getting two out of three was better or worse than what he could usually do. This is interesting since each member of the landing party was apparently chosen for a specific thing, and whatever Daniel's tests are telling him must be a big part of the freighter's goals.

The next episode is titled "The Constant" and will reveal what happened to Sayid and Desmond on their way to the freighter. A week is far too long to wait for each installment of this show. It's downright cruel!
