Sheryl CrowSinger Sheryl Crow was pushed into adopting her first child after she was diagnosed with breast cancer - because the devastating illness made her rethink her life.

The star found out she was suffering from the illness in 2005, just weeks after splitting from her fiancé, cancer-surviving cyclist Lance Armstrong. And Crow insists the news spurred her on to start a family - despite not having a man in her life.

She says, "I began the adoption process right after I finished my treatment. Wyatt (her son) came in May last year. I have always felt like I was meant to be a mom, but I had kept it from happening because I had believed that you are supposed to look for a family with a mum and a dad. When my relationship fell apart just before I was diagnosed with cancer, I said, 'Right I'm going to rethink this.'"
