'American Idol' Week Two Brings Emotional Overload

American IdolSome people cried, some laughed and some swore in anger. Those emotions summed up the two days of "American Idol" auditions in San Diego, Calif., and Charleston, South Carolina. Last week when I said there was a change in the judge's attitude, I didn't believe it would lead to these immense outbursts of emotions. We have all seen much of this behavior from previous years, but this year was incomparable.

Charleston, dubbed the friendliest city in the nation, brought mostly a wave of despair and utter loss for a majority of the contestants. Plenty of people left in firm belief that singing was their destiny, when in reality, it wasn't anything more than wishful thinking. Flared tempers, profanity and crumpled audition numbers detailed their resentment. "American Idol" turned Jerry Springer right before our very eyes. So much for the friendliest city!

Twenty-three year-old Carly Smithson previously tried out for "American Idol" but was disqualified after her citizenship was denied in the United States. Fortunately, this time around she flawlessly passed her audition. See her in Hollywood.

Amy Flynn, 16-years-old, confidently passed her audition and even persuaded Simon to re-examine his sexual lifestyle and contemplate abstinence until marriage. Not really. Whether she's as annoying as Simon thought she was, we'll have yet to find out. Idol's consistent spotlights on heartwarming stories are seemingly becoming more prevalent.

Idol also chose to spotlight pilot Lindsey Goodman but was reluctant to let her through to the next round.

Luckily, London Weidberg, who put her musical career on hold in order to care for her ill father, delivered a decent performance. Though her voice didn't win over Simon, it earned her a spot in Hollywood.

Siblings Jeffery and Michelle Lampkin brought the 'Ow factor' back to "American Idol" by singing a semi-rough duet. Pitchy in areas, the two performed well and were diamonds in the rough... at least in this city.

Honestly, focusing on 27-year-old Oliver Highman's daughter being born was touching, but unless he earned a spot in Hollywood regardless of his voice, how could they even think of denying him a spot? But they did. Fortunately, Oliver still had a reason to celebrate - he just welcomed his new daughter Emma Grace.

San Diego and Charleston combined, there were so many emotional "no's" this week. Yet, at least fans can sleep at night knowing this year will contain some real talent. Next, "American Idol" heads to Omaha, Nebraska. Will this country scene produce the next Carrie Underwood or a sequel to this week's audition round? On a side note, Simon, it's Obama, not O-bama!
