Jim CantoreYou may not know his name, but meteorologist Jim Cantore is one of the most recognized faces in weather today. Turn on The Weather Channel during extreme weather events, and you'll likely see Jim in the midst of an ice storm, chasing a tornado, or battling torrential rain.

Starpulse recently had the opportunity to talk to Jim about his job and a new series debuting on The Weather Channel, "When Weather Changed History." The new series looks at the power of nature and its impact on modern history.

How long have you been interested in the weather? What fascinates you about it?
I guess all my life. What fascinates me is it's something we can't control, but it can control us.

What's your favorite disaster and why?
I don't think having a favorite disaster is allowed.

What's the scariest thing that's ever happened to you on location?

Lightning within 25 yards. That would have left a mark.

Tell us about a memorable weather event during your career.

Well there are many, but Hurricane Katrina is the biggest of the biggest and even though it struck the Gulf Coast, it affected and is still affecting many people in some way.

What is the most difficult thing about reporting during storms?

During the height of the storm, putting a succinct sentence together can be a very difficult. I have had to stop and start over on several occasions.

What's your favorite season and why?
Fall. Is there any other season for this old Vermont boy? I don't think so...

Describe your perfect day.
Believe it or not 75 degrees, slight breeze from the southeast.

What's your favorite part of the job?
When people notice that I love my work and they appreciate the service TWC provides for them. I always say the weather speaks for itself and I just help speak for it.

What can viewers expect with "When Weather Changed History?" What will they learn from the show?
The HD series When Weather Changed History on The Weather Channel looks at the power of nature and its incredible impact on history, offering often-surprising effects of weather on historic events and revealing moments in history when the forces of weather intertwine with the forces of human nature to influence the course of history.

When Weather Changed History

What are some of the most significant historical events that have been influenced by the weather?
The premiere episode on the space shuttle Challenger recalls the tragic day in recent history that a lot of people remember. The series also focuses on events such as Operation Eagle Claw, which occurred during the Iran-Contra hostage crisis in 1979, and the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, which was a true struggle of man against the power of nature and weather - and the danger of underestimating that power.

"When Weather Changed The World" is like no other event for The Weather Channel, with repeat episodes and an interactive component at www.weather.com/history that includes a fun history quiz and a chance to win an exciting trip for four in an online sweepstakes. The show premieres Jan. 6 at 9 p.m. EST.
