What to Watch This Week (Dec. 31 - Jan. 6)
Monday, Dec. 31
Lack of New Year's Eve plans leaving you stranded at home? Never fear, there's actually some shows to watch before the ball starts dropping on ABC.
How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8 p.m.), Aliens In America (The CW, 8:30 p.m.) - The CW and CBS offer up a pair of stand-out episode reruns. The awkwardness and misguided thinking of being a teenager is perfectly captured in “The Metamorphosis” episode of "Aliens in America." Meanwhile, on "How I Met Your Mother," Barney offers Lily money to paint him nude. Need we say more? Both shows are guaranteed to start your journey into 2008 with some genuine laughs.
"Saturday Night Live in the '90s: Pop Culture Nation" (NBC, 8 p.m.) - SNL is still dark, but this retrospective with interviews and clips from those involved in the production of the sketch show provides a respite.
The Twilight Zone (Sci-Fi, 8 a.m.) - A marathon of the landmark series that's influenced everything from The Outer Limits to Lost starts on Sci-Fi channel at 8 a.m. and continues through Tuesday.
Tuesday, Jan. 1
Gracie's Choice (Lifetime, 7 p.m.) - Before she was Veronica Mars, before she was Elle on Heroes, Kristen Bell was a high school student playing mom to her brothers and sisters in this get-the-tissues-ready TV movie.
Wednesday, Jan. 2
Gossip Girl (The CW, 9 p.m.) - The show ups the stakes when the whole gang is brought together in a pact of secrecy after they get caught breaking into the school pool. Meanwhile, Vanessa (yes, she's still there, unfortunately) learns some juicy information about Chuck and Blair.
Law & Order (NBC, 9 p.m.) - Truly a survivor, the original "Law & Order" heads into it's eighteenth season with a two-hour premiere.
Project Runway (Bravo, 10 p.m.) - In the sort of challenge that separates the show from other reality competitions by showcasing true creative talent, the contestants must collect supplies from a chocolate shop. Good luck with that!
Thursday, Jan. 3
"Coupling" (BBC America, 5:30 p.m.) – If you're lucky enough to get the channel, check out this hilarious show about a group of friends who hang out in a bar and talk about sex a lot. Think Friends if it was on HBO and don't think of the NBC remake.
Junebug (Lifetime, 9 p.m.) - Find out what all the Amy Adams fuss is about in this indie from 2005 starring Benjamin McKenzie (The O.C.) and Adams as his pregnant, naively innocent wife who's awe-struck by her big city sister-in-law.
Friday, Jan. 4
Friday Night Lights (NBC, 9 p.m.) - The team must deal with hosting a rival team whose school was hit by a tornado while the Taylors must deal with their new housemate, Tim Riggins, in this fresh episode. It's new. It's good. Please watch it.
"How To Look Good Naked" (Lifetime, 9 p.m.) - Done making over straight dudes, Carson Kressley waves his magic makeover wand over women with low self-esteem, concluding in a nude photo shoot.
Saturday, Jan. 5
Day of rest. Take a breather. Go outside.
Sunday, Jan. 6
Desperate Housewives (ABC, 9 p.m.) - The outcome of the tornado that hit Wisteria Lane is revealed in the show's last completed episode.
Cashmere Mafia (ABC, 10 p.m.) - Four friends brave dating and working in Manhattan in this new series starring Lucy Liu, Bonnie Somerville, Miranda Otto and Frances O'Connor. It's from Sex and the City executive producer Darren Star if the premise sounds familiar.
