Britney Spears put her legal and custody woes behind her to go car shopping on Wednesday. The pop superstar celebrated the success of her comeback album Blackout, which debuted at number two on the U.S. charts on Wednesday, by paying out more than $200,000 for a luxury Mercedes-Benz.

Spears spent two hours at a Mercedes dealership in Van Nuys, California, test driving a silver SUV and a white Mercedes SL 65.

She eventually bought the car, which she drove off the lot, followed by her assistant, who left in the Mercedes Spears has been driving for the past year.

A bystander said, "Britney was very happy with her purchase but made it clear that she might return for the SUV she test drove. That would certainly be a great family car for her - and prove she means business about becoming a great mom."

Spears' old Mercedes has plenty of bad memories for Spears - she was driving it when she was accused of a hit and run in August, and she could face another hit and run charge for driving the motor over a police officer's foot.

The car also cost her dear in her custody battle for kids Sean Preston and Jayden James - when they were spotted in the backseat without the legally required restraints.
