Kim Basinger is set to play the on-screen mother of Charlize Theron in new film The Burning Plain. The film will be the directional debut of Babel screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga and shooting will begin in Mexico early next month with a release date scheduled for 2009.

Basinger, 53, will play a woman seen through the childhood eyes of Theron's character Sylvia who tries to find common ground with her parents in adulthood.
