Divorce Sent Kid Rock To Iraq
He explains, "I was going through a hard time after the divorce, and I really wanted to do something positive that was unselfish. I was talking to (U.S. Republican) Senator Bill First, and I asked him who was going to Iraq for Christmas. He said nobody, as far as he'd heard."
"Something went off in me, and I got that warm feeling and was like, 'That's the right thing to do - jump on a plane with my guitar and spend Christmas in Iraq.'" Kid Rock admits the mood of the country had drastically changed since his last visit to the troops - and the reality of war really kicked in.
He adds, "It was very scary... Riding around in Black Hawks (helicopters) three or four times a day, then hearing how one got shot down. (I went) to the hospital on Christmas Day after an IED (improvised explosive device) had just hit a convoy in the streets of Baghdad. One kid was dying. The chaplain was going up to see him."
