There is an heir to Friends
out there and, shockingly, it's on CBS. The network's How I Met Your Mother
, a modest ratings player that deserves better, is a charming, funny, romantic quest for true love.
The show spawns lines like, "It's gonna be legend -- wait for it -- and I hope you're not lactose intolerant because the second half of that word is DAIRY!" That quote comes from the hilarious Neil Patrick Harris
, who plays ladies man Barney, and there's plenty more Barneyisms where that came from ("Suit up," anybody?).
"How I Met Your Mother's" greatest strength, however, lies in the chemistry between its cast, who works together as if they've been doing this as long as the cast of "Friends." They portray a true group of friends with all the in-jokes, catchphrases and history that comes along with it.
The newest friend, played by Cobie Smulders
, lives up to her namesake, smoldering with good looks while maintaining a relatable and charming personality. Robin is the type of girl that guys want to date and girls want to be best friends with. Robin also delivered the show's funniest moment: a hilariously cheesy 80s music video for her former teen pop star alter ego's hit song, "Let's Go to the Mall."
It's a shame she isn't the mother in the title, but "How I Met Your Mother" proves it's not about the ending. It's the journey that is truly the most important thing, and this is one show that rewards those who take that journey together.
