Ang Lee 'Played' Both Roles In Controversial Sex Scene
The Brokeback Mountain director's new movie recently won the Golden Bear Award for best film at the Venice Film Festival in Italy, but it has come under fire from censors who feel one particular sex scene is too much.
Ratings board officials in America have given the movie a hard NC-17 rating, while Chinese censors insist Lee must cut 30 minutes from the movie for them to consider releasing it.
Lee knew his film, based on a short story, would feature explosive scenes and went out of his way to make sure his stars, Tony Leung and Tang Wei, were well prepared.
He tells USA Today newspaper, "I coached the actors through the scenes and verbalized it... I'm embodying both of them. I end up playing both parts (sic). With the girl, I put myself into her heart... It's a film experience I never experienced before."
Lee admits making the controversial film "scared" him. He adds, "It (story) came from a woman writer who examined female sexualities and challenged the patriotism of the Chinese. It was very brave of her."
