Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has launched a scathing attack on American women - branding them "sluts".

The Tonight, Tonight rocker spoke out against a legion of U.S. females at English music festival Reading on Sunday, but excused his comments because he is 'an alternative' star.

Halfway through the band's set, he caught sight of a woman in a skimpy outfit - to which he said, "There's something about a girl who's willing to take her top off so quickly."

He told the crowd, "American girls are sluts too.

"See - isn't it great to be alternative - you can say all those things."
