Halle Berry's dream has reportedly come true: the actress recently learned she's two months pregnant, sources tell The National Enquirer. But Halle's baby joy has been tempered by her fears that her diabetes could turn the happiest event of her life into a difficult pregnancy.
Halle is so happy right now, said an insider. She's wanted a baby for so long. But at the same time she's scared because she is very aware of the complications that having diabetes can cause during pregnancy. She's doing everything possible to make sure her baby is born healthy.
According to medical experts, diabetes increases the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth and birth defects for expectant moms with the disease. Moms with diabetes have a significantly greater risk of having babies born with heart, brain, kidney, and spinal problems as a result of changes of blood glucose levels in the body during pregnancy. But with the proper care, Halle has an excellent chance of delivering a healthy baby.
And Halle isn't taking any chances. She's making sure she receives the best possible medical care to control her blood sugar level while she's expecting.
Halle, who turned 41 on August 14, vowed to her pal, Oprah Winfrey, two years ago that she was determined to have a baby before she turned 40. After two failed marriages, one to baseball slugger David Justice and another to singer Eric Benet, she had at last given up hope of having her own child and said she was considering adoption.
And although she didn't meet her original deadline, Halle was absolutely delighted after discovering that she and model boyfriend Gabriel Aubry, 32, are expecting a baby in the spring. Halle's been dating him since November 2005.
The pregnancy is going to mean a lot of juggling for the busy actress, who has a string of projects in the pipeline "but motherhood is Halle's number-one priority, say friends.
The most important thing for Halle is that she can share it with Gabriel. Halle's the best thing that has ever happened to her. Obviously being pregnant in your 40s means you have to take extra care of yourself, and, having diabetes, Halle is aware that she will have to take things very easy during her pregnancy.
Halle recently signed to star in the film Tulia, which pairs her with Billy Bob Thornton, but producers may have to change the fall shooting schedule to accommodate Halle, added the insider.
A baby may not be the only cause for celebration next spring. The actress, who won an Oscar for her role in Monster's Ball, is sure to be nominated for another best actress award for her role as a struggling single mom in the upcoming Things We Lost in the Fire.
