Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber have left gossips confused about the status of their relationship after telling reporters at the Tony Awards they had wed and then denying the story.

Schreiber, who was among the stars nominated at the New York theater awards, told TV reporters at the head of the red carpet the couple had exchanged vows, only to deny the story 30 minutes later.

The 39-year-old actor told Entertainment Tonight's cameras, "We are married. You got it first. Break the story!"

He then insisted the announcement was a joke, adding, "It's not true." And when his pregnant partner was asked if the secret wedding reports were true, she simply replied, "No."
