Gael Garcia BernalMexican movie hunk Gael Garcia Bernal is set to star in the latest movie adaptation of Latin American supernovel Pedro Paramo. The Amores Perros star, who makes his debut as a director with Deficit at the Cannes Film Festival in France this month, is finalizing a deal to play author Juan Rulfo's literary hero.

The novel became a literary sensation in the Spanish-speaking world when it first hit shelves in the mid-1950s. The story follows Juan Preciado on his travels to Comala, the town his mother left after marrying the murderous Pedro Paramo, who stole her lands and inheritance.

Chile-born Alejandro Amenabar, who directed Nicole Kidman in The Others has signed on as the film's director.
