Mexican movie hunk Gael Garcia Bernal
is set to star in the latest movie adaptation of Latin American supernovel Pedro Paramo. The Amores Perros
star, who makes his debut as a director with Deficit
at the Cannes Film Festival in France this month, is finalizing a deal to play author Juan Rulfo's literary hero.
The novel became a literary sensation in the Spanish-speaking world when it first hit shelves in the mid-1950s. The story follows Juan Preciado on his travels to Comala, the town his mother left after marrying the murderous Pedro Paramo, who stole her lands and inheritance.
Chile-born Alejandro Amenabar, who directed Nicole Kidman
in The Others
has signed on as the film's director.
