Gabriel ByrneGabriel Byrne insists a "pall of fear" still hangs over his adopted New York City as the sixth anniversary of 9/11 approaches. The star has really started to notice the concern on faces he passes in the street after shooting stirring new film Jindabyne, in which the Irish actor plays the leader of a community on the brink of despair.

He says, "Living in a city like New York, I'm very much aware that over the city hangs this invisible pall of fear; people in New York are afraid. Sometimes they'll come out and they'll talk about it, but most of the time there's an unconscious, unspoken fear that hangs over the city."

And he worries that parents are now passing on that fear to their kids: "Kids pick that up. They understand it in some form even though they can't articulate it."
