Andrew Lloyd Webber has abandoned his long-held plans to compose a musical based on controversial novel The Master and Margarita. Lloyd Webber had hoped to adapt Mikhail Bulgakov's book, but has now decided the Russian novel is too dense to be turned into a musical.

He says, "I've decided it's un-doable. It's just too difficult for an audience to contemplate. It's a very complicated novel."
