Former Mest frontman Tony Lovato has been jailed on suspicion of murdering his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend. The Jaded (These Years) singer, 26, told Los Angeles police on Sunday morning that he had been assaulted by 25-year-old Wayne Hughes in a Studio City parking lot.

Lieutenant Andrew Neiman of the Los Angeles Police Department says, "At some point, Mr. Lovato produced a knife and the victim was stabbed. He has been booked for criminal homicide.

"He did in fact call the police, call 911, after the incident and remained on the scene (to) surrender himself."

Lovato told police he had stabbed Hughes with a pocketknife after the man attacked him.

Hughes was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills and died in hospital from stab wounds to his torso.

Neiman said police were called to an apartment above the parking lot on Saturday night following reports of a fight between the men, but no arrests were made.

Mest, who was on Madonna's Maverick Records, split in 2006 after 10 years together.
