Funnyman Will Ferrell is relieved after learning figure skaters have a sense of humor. The star feared his new comedy Blades Of Glory would upset ice kings and queens because it lampoons the sport.
But, after screening the movie for a theatre full of skaters, Ferrell quickly realized the Lycra-clad ladies and gentlemen don't take the sport, or themselves, too seriously.
The actor, who plays one half of a skating double act in the film, says, "The fact that the skating community showed up was uncanny because we were expecting a lot of flack. Not only did they embrace it but they thought it was funny. Ice skaters know how hard the sport is and yet they have an incredible sense of humor about it. I think they know that there's a campy element to figure skating.
"It's all about the pageantry and the outfits and the flashiness. I think, at the end of the day, anybody that's associated with the sport is just happy that you're paying attention to them. Anyway, even if they were mad at us I'm not really worried about getting beat up by a figure skater, or getting cold-cocked in the back of the head by (top skater) Michelle Kwan."
