Outspoken rocker Pete Townshend has hit out at reformed trio The Police in a New York radio interview - because he's sick of the Police being dubbed a classic rock act. The snooty star insists only bands like his group The Who and The Rolling Stones deserve the lofty title, insisting The Police are little more than a punk act.

In a webchat on radio station WAXQ-FM's website earlier this week Townshend wrote: "The Police are punk... They're not classic rock.

"You've got the Stones and the Who: classic rock - finished. It's all over after that. This is just music. It's not classic (sic) anything."
