Australian actor Guy Pearce blames the poor film choices that hampered his career in the late 1990s on the fact he was permanently stoned. The Memento star regrets films like The Time Machine and The Count Of Monte Cristo and admits he took time off after making them so he could detox, clean up and remind himself of what was important to him.
He tells magazine Out, "I had to sort myself out. I literally went to the most remote part of Australia and sat there for a month on the beach and tried to learn to meditate. I cleaned myself out and wrote letters to people I needed to write to and took a good hard look at myself. I read about 27 books on Buddhism and thankfully came back and really kind of saw what was going on."
Pearce also sought counseling from a naturopath, who helped the actor realize his diet was responsible for his mood swings. He adds, "He said, 'you have to eat something every three hours. You have to graze. Think of yourself like a cow.' Once I took that on board, and I stopped smoking, suddenly I'm the happiest person in the world."
