Tom Cruise & Katie HolmesMuch of the hoopla surrounding Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes began in 2005--the whirlwind romance, the couch jumping, the pregnancy and so forth--but the frenzy following the couple was just getting started.

In January, a sex scene from Katie’s Thank You For Smoking was allegedly cut out due to Tom’s objections. The film’s director later defended the actress, saying,“She was cool for doing four days of shooting, where two of those days she's in bed with Aaron Eckhart's character.”

Rumors then began swirling about the scientology birth process. Katie planned to adhere to strict scientology rules and give birth without screaming obscenities or making loud noises. The actress also allegedly agreed not to talk to her new arrival for at least seven days after she entered the world. Tabloids outrageously reported that Tom planned on eating the placenta of his newborn child for its nutrients and vitamins. On April 14, the couple became the parents of baby Suri. Ironically, Brooke Shields, the object of Tom’s anti-drug tirades, gave birth on the same day.

Tom’s film Mission: Impossible III failed to meet its box office expectations in May, and many believed it was because the actor’s popularity took a nosedive following his personal actions. A few months later, Paramount Pictures failed to renew its producing contract with Tom, blaming his off-screen behavior. Sumner Redstone told the Wall Street Journal, "His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount. As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal."

By June, Tom and Katie had hammered out a prenuptial agreement, and many fans began counting down the days until the wedding. That same month, Tom topped the annual Forbes magazine Celebrity 100 list. His movie successes and his romance with Katie propelled him to the top with an estimated $67 million fortune, re-earning him the title five years after he first snatched it.

Later that month, the sculptor behind Britney Spears' controversial pregnancy statue developed his own take on the first stool squeezed out by baby Suri. Daniel Edwards' bronze sculpture, entitled "Suri's Bronzed Baby Poop," went on display at the Capla Kesting Fine Art gallery in New York. The first official photos of Suri Cruise finally became public in September following months of questions why the couple waited so long to release photos.

Finally, Tom & Katie cruised down the aisle at Castello Odescalchi in Bracciano, Italy, on November 18. Several celebrity stars, many of whom happened to be scientologists, attended the lavish ceremony. Tom’s couch-jumping pal Oprah Winfrey was notably absent from the invite list. They followed this up with a wedding party back in the United States for pals who were unable to make the European ceremony.

“Entertainment Tonight” voted Tom Cruise the top star of 2006, and another survey said he and Katie had the “Wedding of the Year.” So what’s up next for the dynamic duo? It’s just a matter of time before the couple starts making headlines again, perhaps for splitting up?
