Christy TurlingtonVeteran supermodel Christy Turlington has blasted the industry in which she made her name, branding the modeling world as "all smoke and mirrors." The 37-year-old says she regrets spending the early 1990s as one of the catwalk's original four supermodels, along with Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell and "hated" being known only for her looks.

She says, "It was a dull point in fashion and a lot of energy got projected on to us to generate some excitement. And I guess that's why it'll probably never happen again, because it was all smoke and mirrors. There wasn't really anything to it. When I was a teenager working as a model part-time it was fine. It was like a hobby. But as soon as I was only a model I hated it. I hated the idea that that's who you are, and that's who you're perceived as.

"How could I have spent so many years? So many hours? If I could add up the hours I spent letting people fuss and take light-meter readings and primp, it could make you scream."

Turlington announced her modeling comeback earlier this year as the face of cosmetic giant Maybelline.
