The Monkees Celebrate 40 Years With Reissues Of First Two Albums As Limited, Double-Disc Editions

MonkeesHey! Hey! It's The Monkees' 40th anniversary. The '60s hitmakers revisit their '66 debut and '67 follow-up with limited-edition reissues of the group's first two #1 albums. Rhino remasters and expands both albums for deluxe, double-disc sets that feature stereo and mono mixes of the original releases, rare alternate versions of album tracks, as well as previously unreleased tracks. "The Monkees" and "More Of The Monkees" are now available.

The Monkees formed in 1966 when Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were picked out of a mass casting call to portray a band on a zany TV sitcom designed to mimic the madcap spirit of The Beatles' A Hard Day's Night. The group's first two releases combined for a total of 31 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Album chart and helped the group sell more than 16 million albums between 1966 and 1968-more than The Beatles and Rolling Stones combined.

MonkeesOn the Billboard Album chart for 78 weeks after its release in 1966, The Monkees' self-titled debut unleashed Monkeemania with "Last Train To Clarksville," the band's first single and first #1 hit. The Monkees deluxe edition contains the original album in stereo including the hit single "(Theme From) The Monkees." The first disc's bonus tracks include an unreleased mix of "Papa Gene's Blues"-a song produced by Nesmith featuring additional vocals not heard on the original; plus an unissued take of "(I Prithee) Do Not Ask For Love" that includes Jones on vocals. The second disc contains the original album in mono bolstered by nine bonus tracks including the unreleased Nesmith demo version of "Propinquity (I've Just Begun To Care)" and an ultra-rare jingle The Monkees recorded for Kellogg's.

The group's follow-up-and second of four consecutive #1 albums-was issued in 1967, the same year The Monkees' television show earned the Emmy® for "Outstanding Comedy Series." Logging 70 weeks on the Billboard Album chart, More Of The Monkees became the third-best-selling LP of the '60s. The deluxe edition features the original album in stereo including the #1 single "I'm A Believer"-written by Neil Diamond--as well as the Top 20 hit "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" and the classic cut "She." The first disc's bonus tracks include an alternate mix of "I'm A Believer" and a mix of "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)" with Tork's narration. The second disc features the original album in mono along with eight bonus tracks including the first recorded version of "Valleri" and a previously unreleased alternate mix of "Tear Drop City."

Both reissues include unpublished photos and interviews with The Monkees along with in-depth liner notes penned by Andrew Sandoval, author of The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story Of The '60s TV Pop Sensation.
