Star TrekLost genius J.J. Abrams is to make a new Star Trek movie. The movie - which will be the eleventh in the series - will be go back the franchise's roots and focus on the early days of original characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock. It will include their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first outer-space mission.

The film - which as yet doesn't have a name or a cast - will be released in 2008. It's hoped that Abrams - who is best know for cult shows, Alias and Lost, and the up-coming Tom Cruise blockbuster, Mission Impossible 3 - will be able to reverse the sci-fi franchise's ailing fortunes.

His film will come 6 years after the last movie in the series flopped at the box office. Star Trek: Nemesis took just $43 million in the US.

Meanwhile, the most recent TV incarnation - Star Trek: Enterprise, which starred Quantum Leap actor Scott Bakula - was pulled last year after four seasons due to poor viewing figures.
