Movie veteran Dennis Hopper earned $1 million (£575,000) in one evening when he unveiled a collection of his billboard-inspired paintings at the Ace Gallery in Los Angeles on Thursday.

The Apocalypse Now star began painting at the age of nine and insists LA's driving culture and impressive billboards have always sparked his imagination.

The 69-year-old says, "I've had a love/hate relationship with LA my whole life. You drive for ever here; it's all cars and billboards. There isn't much else to see. I was a farm boy from Kansas. I fancied myself as an artist. I ended up making my living as an actor, but I was very, very interested in the painting world."
