Arctic Monkeys Sweep NME Awards

February 24th, 2006 10:03am EST
Arctic MonkeysNew British band Arctic Monkeys cleaned up at the NME Awards last night - scooping three of the magazine's top prizes. The Sheffield four-piece beat off stiff competition from Oasis, Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand to win Best Track for I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor, as well as Best Band and Best New Band.

Also present at the glittering bash was Kanye West - who turned up to collect his Best Solo Artist prize. The rapper was a surprise winner at an event that traditionally recognises rock acts.

Elsewhere, Kaiser Chiefs - the big winners at this year's Brits - only scooped one award - for Best Album. Former Stone Roses singer Ian Brown was honoured with the God Like Genius prize.

U2 frontman Bono shocked organisers of the event - held in London's Hammersmith Palais - when he used the word "f%^k" fourteen times while introducing the Hero of the Year Award recipient Sir Bob Geldof.

He said: "Bob Geldof has told me to f#$k off perhaps hundreds, maybe thousands of times.

"Thank you very much for this award and to my friend who is picking it up in all our honour - f#%k off."
