Actor Morgan Freeman
will play jazz legend Duke Ellington
in new film The Jazz Ambassadors
, which exposes members of Ellington's entourage as government spies. The film will suggest the US government planted spies among Ellington's entourage when his ensemble toured hostile parts of the world.
The movie focuses on the orchestra's tour of Iraq during a 1963 Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)-led coup which eventually paved the way for Saddam Hussein's rise to power.
Former US State Department official Tom Simons, who accompanied Ellington's band when he was a young man, is collaborating on the film. The movie will explore when, and if, Ellington knew of the covert program involving his orchestra.
