Steven Spielberg Continues on Sci-Fi Track
Movie mogul Steven Spielberg is set to produce a remake of 1951 science fiction thriller When Worlds Collide. The original film, which sees a group of people fleeing to another planet to escape a cataclysmic collision between earth and a dead star, won an Oscar for special effects in 1952.The story is set in motion when Dr. Cole Henderson (Larry Keating) announces that an extraterrestrial planet is on a collision course with Earth. No one believes Henderson's story, except for crippled financier Stanton (John Hoyt), who finances the construction of a gigantic spaceship to transport selected survivors from the doomed Earth to another Earthlike planet. When it becomes obvious that Henderson's predictions will come true, a worldwide lottery is held to select people who will be rescued by Stanton's spaceship. In the climactic scenes, the worlds do indeed collide, with spectacular results. But will the spaceship be able to take off and seek out a Brave New World?
Spielberg has enlisted the talents of action and fantasy film specialist Stephen Sommers to direct the remake, after being impressed with his efforts on The Mummy and Van Helsing.
