Daniel LanoisU2 producer and solo artist Daniel Lanois was honored earlier this week with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hamilton Music Awards in his native Canada. Lanois, hailed as one of the most influential producers in pop music over the past 20 years, was presented with his award by Garth Hudson, legendary keyboard player for The Band. Lanois received three other Hamilton Music Awards including, best producer, best guitarist and best instrumental recording - - for his latest solo album, Belladonna.

As part of a special tribute to Lanois, Irish supergroup U2 interrupted their sold out concert in Atlanta, GA to send a special message of appreciation to Lanois, their longtime friend and producer. "We want to do a TV broadcast right now to Hamilton in Canada," U2 lead vocalist Bono told 18,000 fans at Atlanta's Phillips Arena last Friday night. "It is the place where Daniel Lanois grew up. We love Danny boy Lanois and without him we would not be here."

Lanois recently wrapped up a historic North American tour with Chicago's indie music icons Tortoise in support of his latest Anti release Belladonna (click for review). The pairing of Lanois and Tortoise was hailed by the Boston Herald as, "a heavenly matchup," while Jambase.com called the teaming a "one-of-a-kind night of musical alchemy." Critical acclaim has also been pouring in for Belladonna with The LA Weekly describing the album as, "an intensely moody, steel-guitar-drenched thing of rare beauty," and Performing Songwriter declaring it "an immersive, alluring work, as mysterious and evocative as a dry wind."
