Catch Carly Simon on the Queen Mary 2 on PBS
The 90-minute program showcases Simon's inspired renditions of romantic standards from her chart-topping album, Moonlight Serenade, as well as some of her most-loved greatest hits, and includes behind-the-scenes footage of the renowned singer exploring the elegant surroundings of the grandest passenger liner ever built.
Queen Mary 2's sumptuous interiors provided the perfect setting for the sublime music of Carly Simon, and viewers will be treated to an inside view of the ship as Simon makes her glamorous entrance into the Grand Lobby; rehearses in the Queens Room; visits the master of Queen Mary 2, Commodore Ronald Warwick, on the ship's Bridge; and goes shopping in the boutique, among other scenes.
Simon had a very clear vision of the concert that would complement the CD of Moonlight Serenade. Having sailed many transatlantic ocean voyages, including on QE2, there was no question in her mind that Queen Mary 2's ballroom was the perfect venue.
Simon croons with her signature sensual vocal stylings to cherished romantic ballads penned by such songwriting legends as Glenn Miller, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, and the Gershwins. Ballroom dancers dressed to the nines add a timeless ambiance as they glide effortlessly across the floor during these song selections.
Simon also taped a private acoustic set in an intimate corner of the Commodore Club, one of the ship's most elegant cocktail lounges, and was joined by her daughter, Sally Taylor, as well as two of her other favorite back-up singers.
The full concert DVD on Columbia Records goes on sale today and was directed by veteran concert filmographer Jim Gable who has worked with other such music icons as Sting, the Rolling Stones and Cyndi Lauper.
