new movie Miami Vice
has been thrown into chaos by a real-life shooting. Production on the remake of the hit '80s TV show
, which also stars Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx
and is being directed by Michael Mann
, had to be halted in the Dominican Republic capital of Santo Domingo after a soldier shot an armed man near the hotel where the cast and crew were working.
The soldier, who is part of a team assigned to provide security for Farrell and Foxx and the rest of the cast, had been standing guard outside the hotel when he was approached by Mario Torres who suddenly pulled out a pistol and began firing shots. Torres' rampage was stopped after the soldier, who reportedly fired just one round, shot Torres in the side of his body.
The 44-year-old assailant is currently being treated at a Santo Domingo hospital, where he is said to be in a stable condition, and will be charged when he is well enough to leave.
Luckily, no one else was hurt in the attack. The Dominican Republic's culture minister, Jose Rafael Lantigua, has condemned the incident, saying: "The Dominican Republic is being put on the world map with future film shoots and this type of act affects our image."
Shooting on the movie is expected to resume in the country later this week, and security is expected to be increased on set.
