Oscar-nominated actress Eleanor Parker died near her Palm Springs, California, home on Monday. She was 91.

Richard Gale, a friend of Parker's family said that she died of complications from pneumonia.

"She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children at a medical facility near her home in Palm Springs," he said.

Parker starred as The Baroness Elsa von Schraeder in hit movie musical The Sound Of Music. Ironically, the actress' death comes just days after a remake of the hit musical aired live on NBC.

The actress appeared in nearly 50 films, including "The Man With the Golden Arm," "Detective Story" and "Scaramouche"; and she was nominated for an Oscar in 1950, 51 and 55.

Born on June 26, 1922, Parker made her film debut in 1942's "Soldiers in White." Her last screen role came over two decades ago in the made-for-TV movie "Dead on the Money."

"Eleanor Parker was and is one of the most beautiful ladies I have ever known," said actor Christopher Plummer in a statement about his late co-star. "Both as a person and as a beauty. I hardly believe the sad news for I was sure she was enchanted and would live forever."

The actress leaves behind four children from two of her marriages, the last of which ended in 2001 when fourth husband Raymond Hirsch, whom she wed in 1966, died of esophageal cancer.
