Stage & Screen Actress Julie Harris Dies At 87

Celebrated Broadway & movie star Julie Harris passed away on Saturday at the age of 87 at her West Chatham, Massachusetts home.

The actress, who starred opposite James Dean in the 1955 film adaptation of John Steinbeck's East of Eden, died of congestive heart failure according to friend Francesca James via the Associated Press.

The actress, who was honoured with the National Medal of Arts in 1994, made her stage debut in 1945's "It's a Gift", and seven years later made her film debut in the film version of the Carson McCullers play "The Member of the Wedding".

Harris came one award shy of the rare EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), winning five Tony Awards, three Emmys and a Grammy. She was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar in 1953 for her role in Wedding.

Some of the actress's credits include the 1988 Sigourney Weaver film "Gorillas in the Mist", and roles on 80s shows Knots Landing, Bonanza and Family Ties.

Her final film role was in 2009's The Lightkeepers.
