By Joan Alperin-Schwartz: 'Mr. Popper's Penguins' is directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls) and stars Jim Carrey as Mr. Tommy Popper. This film is actually based on a 1939 novel that has been read by children for decades.
Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, young Tommy Popper looks forward to the moments when he can speak to his world traveling father on his ham radio. His father calls him from far away exotic places and as time goes by, Tommy misses his absentee dad more and more. He is one very lonely boy.
Years later, Tommy is now Mr. Popper, a highly successful real estate developer in Manhattan. Amicable divorced from Amanda (Carla Gugino) with two children (Madeline Carroll and Maxwell Perry Cotten) who he sees on alternate weekends, Mr. P. lives the life of luxury in his ultra modern Park Avenue apartment and is well on his way to becoming a partner at his prestigious firm.
Popper is a fast talking salesman who convinces the owners of historic buildings to sell them to his employers. These beautiful buildings wind up being torn town and replaced with money making monstrosities.
But one morning a final gift from Popper's late father changes his life in ways he never could have imagined.
Yep...Just as the title suggests, Tommy Popper receives six large penguins. Now these aren't just any penguins...These are penguins that bond with one person and do not let go. They also have incredible tracking ability but that's another story.
Soon, Popper's new winged roommates turn his life upside down and eventually he falls in love with them...And that's exactly what will happen to you when you watch this film.
Yes, on one level 'Mr. Popper's Penguins' may be geared toward tweens and younger...but I absolutely adored it.
This film is about changing your life, coming to terms with your past and learning how to take responsibility for your family...human or animal.
Anyone that has a child or is connected to their inner child must see 'Mr Popper's Penguins'
Jim Carrey and the rest of the cast are wonderful but the real stars of the film are...the Penguins of course. This film is definitely worthy of the five bagels I gave it. My other half had a totally different opinion. Luckily, I get the last word.
'Mr. Popper's Penguins' opens in theaters Friday June 17, 2011.
