Review: 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' - On Stranger Tides' - 'Two Jews On Film' Says Number Four Finds The Gold (Video)
'Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' directed by Rob Marshall is the fourth film of this franchise...And in my opinion, the best.
Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow but this time, except for Geoffrey Rush (Captain Hector Barbossa) and Kevin R. McNally (Joshamee Gibbs) there's a whole new set of characters that may or may not want to do him harm...including the beautiful, enigmatic, Pirate...Angelica (Penelope Cruz).
After an edge of your seat sword fight, Angelica knocks Jack out. When Jack awakens, he finds himself a prisoner aboard a ship called 'Queen Anne's Revenge' manned by zombies. If that isn't bad enough, the Captain of the ship is the legendary, barbarous pirate, Blackbeard (the wonderful Ian McShane) Blackbeard dabbles in the Black Arts and it turns out...Angelica is Blackbeard's daughter.
Blackbeard is your basic evil sociopath who wants to live forever. And what better way to achieve that goal, then to find the FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH. And that's exactly where Blackbeard's ship is headed. Unfortunately so are the British and the Spanish.
So the race is on...Who can get to the FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH first? Oh, there's also a few little things that must be accomplished before gaining entrance to the fountain...collecting three silver chalices and a tear from a mermaid. No biggie.
At the head of the British fleet is the indestructible Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). Barbossa has lost his ship...the Black Pearl and his leg, but nothing can keep this guy down.
Along the way, Captain Jack has to deal with double crosses, People trying to kill him...Some human...Some not so much...and my favorite...Mermaids. They're beautiful...They're seductive...They're enchanting. Only problem is...The mermaids want to eat you...
There's many other characters along for the ride including Philip Swift (Sam Claflin) a missionary whose mission is to save the soul of Blackbeard. Good luck with that. Poor guy gets tortured big time, but he does find love with the beautiful Syrena (Astride Berges-Frisbey)...a mermaid who is has a much kinder heart than her sisters.
'Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' is total fun...The story has been streamlined and all the characters and their motivations are clear cut.
Ian McShane is a standout for me. His Blackbeard is charming one moment and a cold stone killer the next. Yet when he's on the screen, you can't take your eyes off of him. Geoffrey Rush is also excellent. He actually makes you feel compassion for the vile Barbosa...
And of course there's Johnny...Well there's only one thing to say about him...He is Captain Jack Sparrow and the heart and soul of the 'Pirates' franchise.
The 'Two Jews On Film' are very close with their bagel rating. I gave 'Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' 5 bagles out of 5 and John wasn't far behind. Please check out our video to see our 'special guest star'.
The film opens in theaters Friday May 20th, 2011. You won't be disappointed.
