'Two Jews on Film' Review: 'Unknown' - Only one Finds This Thriller Thrilling (Video)
What if you know deep down, who you really were, but couldn't prove it? And what if someone else - someone you didn't know- claimed to be you and everyone believed him? That is the dilemma Dr. Martin Harris (Liam Neeson) faces in the film 'Unknown'.
Dr. Martin Harris, a botanist, arrives with his wife, Liz (January Jones) at the Hotel Adion in Berlin for a biotechnology summit. When Martin realizes that his briefcase was left behind at the airport, he grabs a cab and rushes back to retrieve it. But fate has other plans for our doc. En route, there's a terrible accident and the taxi, the driver and Martin crash into a freezing cold river. Luckily, the driver Gina (Diane Kruger) can swim. She saves Martin's life and then quickly disappears.
Martin wakes up in the hospital after being in a coma for four days. Before he's completely recovered and against the doctor's orders, Martin leaves the hospital and rushes back to the hotel to find his wife. And that's where things get strange.
When he finally sees Liz, not only doesn't she recognize him, but she has another man by her side. And guess what? His name is Dr. Martin Harris (Aidan Quinn) and he has the identification to prove it.
Ignored by disbelieving authorities and hunted by assassins, Martin finds himself alone, tired and on the run in a strange country. As Martin races through Berlin trying get someone to believe him, he starts to question his sanity, his identity and just how far he's willing to go to uncover the truth.
Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan) does a great job directing an international cast which also includes Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon) and Bruno Ganz (The Reader) The film does have a retro feel about it, but it's still great fun. And when the final twist comes, you will be just as blown away as I was. As usual, the 'Two Jews On Film' have different opinions about this thriller...So watch our video to see how many bagels we gave 'Unknown' This film opens in theaters, Friday, February 18, 2011.
