Review: 'Cedar Rapids' 'Two Jews On Film' Have Fun With This Quirky Comedy (Video)
'Cedar Rapids' directed by Miguel Arteta (The Good Girl) is the story of an incredibly naive insurance agent Tim Lippe (Ed Helms) who's spent his entire life in the little town of Brown Valley Wisconsin. He's 34 years old, has never been on an airplane or stayed in a hotel. He's the guy that people always thought would go places, but then, he just...didn't.
That soon changes when his boss at Brown Star Insurance, Bill Krogstad (Stephen Root) dispatches him to the annual ASMI insurance convention in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Tim's mission...to bring back the coveted Two Diamond Award that the company has won three years in a row. Tim is at first reluctant to go, but his girlfriend who he's pre-engaged to - his 7th grade teacher, Millie Vanderhei (Sigourney Weaver) convinces him to take the journey.
From the minute, Tim checks into his hotel, with his ancient American tourister and cummerbund money belt, it's clear...Tim has no idea how the modern world really works.
Luckily Tim has his two roommates Dean Ziegler (the wonderful John C. Reilly) and Ronald Wilkes (Isiah Whitlock, Jr) along with Joan Ostrowski-Fox, a partying, seductive business woman showing him the ropes. They also get Tim to push his boundaries and face his fears.
Tim slowly discovers that not everyone comes to the convention to win the Two Diamond Award. Joan is here to take a break from her everyday life and Dean is here to 'get down' and party hard. Tim also comes to realize that some people here as well as back home in Wisconsin are not exactly who they say they are. And this leads Tim to take an action that will finally make him grow up and become the man he's always wanted to be.
'Cedar Rapids' is a kind of 'coming of age' comedy except it's about a grown man. This film is quirky, funny and most importantly...it has heart. The'Two Jews On Film' fell in love with the characters of 'Cedar Rapids' and so will you. 'Cedar Rapids' opens in theaters, Friday February 11, 2011.
