Based on the novel by Mordecai Richler, 'Barney's Version' is the story of Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti) a Canadian Jew, and a seemingly ordinary guy who lives an extraordinary life. We first meet Barney as an old man and then get to know him through his own memories.  Barney's journey starts out in Italy in the 1970's and spans four decades and two continents.  Along the way he marries three different women (Rachelle Lefevre, Minnie Driver and Rosamund Pike) and has two children.  By Barney's side whenever he needs him, is his father,(Dustin Hoffman) a beat cop from the tough streets of Montreal.  This is Dustin at his best.  Also in the cast is Scott Speedman as Barney's charmingly dissolute, drug addict, best friend.  'Barney's Version' is a love story, a crime story, a film about obsession, but most of all it is about...Barney. And Paul Giamatti nails it. He is absolutely brilliant...Chomping on cigars, swilling booze at his favorite watering hole, hurling vicious remarks at the actress in his long running soap opera, falling madly in love with a woman who is a guest at his wedding...all of this makes for one very unlikable guy...Yet, we wind up routing for him. Come Oscar time, Mr. Giamatti will be on the top of everyone's list.  'Barney's Version' garnered a very high bagel score from the 'Two Jews On Film' Barney's Version' is now playing in limited release but it opens nationwide January 2011
