'30 Rock' Gets Lucky With Kim Jong-Il Death
30 Rock kicks off its sixth season on Thursday, Jan. 12, but there's just one little problem -- an important storyline on the show has been thrown for a loop thanks to death of Kim Jong-Il -- or has it?
Oh, please, the writers of 30 Rock aren't actually sweating the fact that Kim Jong-Il has died in real life just because they've written a script that has one of their characters being held captive by him on the show. Keep reading to find out why it's not a problem…
Last season, Jack Donaghy's wife Avery was kidnapped by Kim Jong-Il while traveling on assignment in North Korea, but thanks to a lucky break in the scripts, the man's real life death won't be a problem when the show returns.
When 30 Rock returns, Avery Jessup-Donaghy is being held captive in North Korea by Kim Jong-Il, played by Margaret Cho. She's pretty much being forced to be his publicist/mistress.
This makes for a sticky situation for Jack Donaghy.
According to a report via TheWrap, show producer Robert Carlock told US Weekly, "Jack's love life is pretty complicated and it just got more complicated because I think, technically, Avery is the First Lady of North Korea."
Carlock added of Jong-Il's death, "We sort of went back to the script because we'd already shot eight or nine episodes, and we realized that luckily we hadn't referred to Kim Jong-Il by name yet -- just to North Korea in general."
Talk about catching a lucky break. Carlock added, "We can't go back and address the changes there, but the fun puzzle is turning around and trying to figure out how to get her out of there and how to continue things."
If anyone can figure out how to mastermind an escape with circumstances like these, it's the 30 Rock team.
The best part of the "fun puzzle" is this little ditty: "Maybe we'll have to have Margaret Cho showing up again having faked her death, because she wants to get a gig on a morning talk show," Carlock said.
Can we keep our fingers crossed on that one?
