Junior Prom (Mark Solomich and Erik Ratensperger) released their self-titled debut EP on Feb 4

The five-track project features the infectious singles “Sheila Put the Knife Down” and “International”, along with three newbies. The duo’s take on indie dance-pop music demands movement from its listeners. The collection, which serves as a preview to their forthcoming full-length project, seems to have bottled the ease from spring days and the residual giddiness from anticipated happiness, to keep its audience swaying back in forth or at a minimum engaged in a competitive game of chair dancing.

“Run Around the Back” is an immediate standout. The track, which runs just over three minutes, could have easily been a hit in the late 70’s with its disco roots. Here the words serve their purpose effectively. They are insanely contagious, witty, and do what all pop songs set out to do: make you feel good. “Big Timer” and “Shoot the Guitar Player” with their electronic trappings are also quite entertaining.

Talking about the recording process for the EP, Solomich said, “We wanted to make music that pushed the envelope but still carried all the hallmarks of great pop song writing. The aesthetic was determined by our lack of resources. We did the best we could with what little we had which was liberating. The full length is going to be a broader exploration of what we started with the EP.”

Their wish list of collaborators is particularly interesting and gives hints of just where this twosome could go. “We did the EP ourselves, but we’ve recently been working with other song writers and producers, which opened up a whole other wealth of creativity. It’s given us a better understanding of being able to collaborate with others… you just have no idea what you’re going to come up with,” said Ratensperger. “That said, we love guys like Diplo, Pharrell, Dangermouse, Mark Ronson, Paul Epworth [and] Timbaland.”

Junior Prom is available for purchase on iTunes. You can catch the duo on tour with Panic! At the Disco and the Colourist for the next few days or so. Peep the remaining dates below.
