Jay Z

The weekend is upon us and we’d like to ensure that you have something to talk about while taking a ride down the elevator with a stranger. Read on to catchup on some Hip-Hop and R&B music news that you may have missed while web stalking the new royal baby.

Jay Z changes name

Hip- Hop impresario Jay-Z has decided that a hyphen is not one of the 99 problems he wishes to have. The rapper has reportedly dropped the hyphen in Jay-Z and will now go by Jay Z. Though it is not as big of a name change as Diddy who dropped the “Puff Daddy” moniker or Snoop Lion who puffed, puffed then passed on the “Dogg” in his name – this new name change for Jay Z hints that the rapper has no plans of bowing out of Hip-Hop any time soon. This isn’t the first time Jay Z’s name has been linked to a name change. Earlier this year, the rapper was rumored to take on wife Beyoncé’s last name to officially go by Shawn Knowles-Carter. That was eventually proven to be false.

TLC biopic coming to VH1

This fall we will have something to look forward to. VH1 has released the official trailer for their made-for TV biopic” CrazySexyCool” (named after the group’s sophomore album) chronicling the greatness of the super group TLC. Now, before you roll your eyes, please know that based on this trailer, we are in for a treat and a well needed trip down memory lane for those of us who are extremely nostalgic. Keke Palmer, Drew Sidora, and Lil Mama will play the roles of Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, and Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes, respectively. In the trailer we see the recreation of the group’s hit singles “Creep” and “No Scrubs” and it is safe to say that the casting for “CrazySexyCool” was genius. I can’t wait to see how they recreate Lisa tossing her ex-beau’s sneakers into a tub and torching the place… what? The film is set to air on October 21 on VH1 and we’ve got the trailer!

Is Beyoncé’s album delayed?

Bad news Bey stans, news is leaking that Beyoncé’s album may not be released this year. Though a release date was never announced, a lot of music fans have been hearing whispers that we would have something this summer or even in the fall. According to a recent report, the songs that the singer has already recorded, have been scrapped. There were 50 songs that were being considered for the unnamed album, some of those songs were written by singer/songwriter’s Ne-Yo and The Dream; however, now Beyoncé is starting from scratch. We’ve heard about two songs from Beyoncé, “Grown Woman” (a snippet of this track was first heard in the Pepsi commercial starring the singer and her many mirror reflections) and the ego-smasher “Bow Down/I Been On.” The good news is that Beyoncé’s tour is seeing great success, reportedly already racking in $55.6 million. Beyoncé’s next show is scheduled for Monday, June 28 at The Staple Center in Los Angeles.

Video Premiere’s

Kanye West’s video for “BlKKK SKKKN Head”

Earlier this week, Kanye released the Nick Knight directed video for his controversial single “BLKKK SKKKN HEAD.” The single appears on Kanye’s sixth studio album “Yeezus.” This video is definitely not filled with daisies and sunshine. Instead you’ll get three mysterious figures wearing black cone hoods, three scary barking dogs, a computer animated Kanye, and Kanye pictured in a pose reminiscent of Jesus Christ. Get an eyeful below.

Kelly Rowland’s new music video

Kelly Rowland has released the video to accompany her single “Dirty Laundry” and it does the job of illustrating what the lyrics started on her album “Talk a Good Game.” The video was directed by Sarah McColgan and shows Kelly dining with her abusive boyfriend and then later submerged rather erotically in a pool of water as she sings the lyrics to the song. There is also a quick glance of three silhouettes near the start of the video surely in reference to Kelly’s role as a member in Destiny’s Child alongside Beyoncé – someone she mentions initially being envious of in the lyrics.

Fin!
