Neil Patrick Harris 'Sorry' For Offending Transgender Community
Neil Patrick Harris is apologizing for offending the transgender community this week while co-hosting Live with Kelly.
As part of his appearance on Friday, the How I Met Your Mother star took part in an “anti-helium” gas experiment with hostess Kelly Ripa. The hosts inhaled the gas which dropped their voices to a deeper than normal level.
After Ripa imitated a famous “Star Wars” scene as Darth Vadar, Harris quoted the infamous, “It puts the lotion in the basket” line delivered by The Silence of the Lambs transgender villain, Buffalo Bill. Harris then said, “I’ve never sounded more like a tranny in my life!”
With online criticisms coming fast, Harris quickly took to his twitter account to make things right. Harris wrote:
“Truly sorry for saying the word ‘tranny’ on Live this week. Twice! Should have been more thoughtful. Didn’t at all mean to offend.”
But at least one transgender rights group is already willing to forgive. Talk About Equality took to their twitter feed to acknowledge Harris’ apology, saying:
“Thanks @actuallynph for acknowledging the word “tranny” is offensive for many. Please help educate others.”
