Review: 'Hotel Transylvania' Is High On Fun & Low On Scares

Cutting to the chase…I liked it! 'Hotel Transylvania' is cute, funny, entertaining, and interestingly educational to an extent. The beauty of this animation is that it illustrates well-known monsters, while expressing a storyline with a subtle universal message - exposing lengths to which humanity's insecurities can extend, and in turn creating monsters within ourselves.

'Hotel Transylvania' follows Dracula as he unveils his over-the-top, lavish five-stake resort. This special place is dedicated to monsters and their families for purposes of living it up - free to be the monsters they are without the oppressive human race bothering them. On one special weekend, Dracula has invited some of the world's most famous monsters – Frankenstein, his bride, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a family of werewolves, and more – to celebrate his daughter Mavis's 118th birthday. For Dracula, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem; however, his world comes tumbling down when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a liking to Mavis.

The good thing about this animated feature is it hides reality of knowing one’s watching a film with the name Adam Sandler or Selena Gomez as its leads. Seriously, I’m not the biggest fan of their work, but from time-to-time we all serve a purpose. Therefore, kudos to Sandler for what I thought was smart in locating a forum where all of his outdated, clumsy, kiddy-like voice “talent” can be used. The same could be said for Selena Gomez as she landed something I actually found interest in watching.

Don’t enter this film expecting PIXAR-like animation accompanied with severe, emotional distress, or scares considering its heavy display of monsters – it’s far from any of that – but 'Hotel Transylvania' does share a warmness which is played out among a decent father/daughter tale touching many levels entailing parenthood, growing up, and all those little trials-and-tribulations falling in-between.

With a little something for parents, for kids, and humanity’s ways as a whole, 'Hotel Transylvania' is worth a watch, so heed my words, or The Boogey Man will come and get you!
