MTV has announced that Beyonce will perform at its Video Music Awards (VMAs) later this month and will also receive the coveted Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Previous winners include Justin Timberlake, Madonna and Britney Spears.

The award is presented to musicians based on their lifetime body of work. Beyonce kicked off her show business career as a member of the all-girl group Destiny's Child in the 1990s. She released her first solo album, "Dangerously In Love," in 2003.

MTV said in a statement: "Not many singers have the power or ability to command such a massive legion of fans, drop a number one album out of literally nowhere and take the world by storm tour after tour. Queen Bey seems to do it with ease and at the same damn time."

Beyonce has received eight VMA nominations this year - best female, best collaboration, best video with a social message, best cinematography, best editing, best choreography, best direction and video of the year for her and Jay Z's "Drunk in Love. The VMAs will air Aug. 24 on MTV.

The pop star and her husband just completed the North American leg of their "On The Run" tour. They have been dodging rumors for weeks that they are splitting up following the end of their tour, which grossed a staggering $100 million.
