Hugh Jackman's "The Wolverine" dominated the weekend box office with a $55 million debut. The mutant superhero film also did well outside of North America, earning $86.1 million around the rest of the world, which covers its $120 million budget.

The film centers on Logan (Jackman), who finds himself in Japan in an unknown world where he faces unexpected and deadly opponents in a life-or-death battle that leave him forever changed.

The film received mixed reviews from critics. According to Starpulse, the film is "part Samurai, part super-hero, part crime drama, with lots of father/daughter/illegitimate son conflict thrown in. Is that a good thing? Well, yes and no.  It is a bit of a hodgepodge, but...entertaining."

"The Wolverine" knocked horror flick "The Conjuring" to the second slot, with $22.1 million. Animated film "Despicable Me 2" came in third with $16 million. "Turbo" ($13.3 million) and "Grown Ups 2" ($11.5 million) rounded out the top five.

Opening this week: "The Smurfs 2" (July 31).
